Africa Internet Users Report 2008/2009:
Approximately 3.5 % of internet users in the world are in
Africa and with technological advances being introduced to
the Continent there is a huge market waiting to be
explored.

The emergence of Internet in Africa is being limited to some
degree compared to the rest of the world. The number of
ISP-registered users,overall number of hosts, IXP-traffic,
and overall available bandwidth all indicate that Africa is way
behind the the rest of the world. Most internet activity and
infrastructure in Africa are concentrated in South
Africa, Morocco and Egypt.

One of the basic problems that internet users in Africa
encounter is that overall available bandwidth is scarce. Most
Internet traffic to or from Africa has to go through expensive
satellite links, since cable connections are few and limited in
capacity. In 2007, Africa had over 1 million broadband
subscribers overall, most of them being companies and
institutions. Internet speed in sub Saharan Africa is slow and
expensive, however with more investment pouring into the
continent the tide should turn for the better for consumers.
